Urgent Medical Intervention at Qena University Hospital Saves a Patient’s Leg from Amputation


Prof. Dr. Youssef Gharbawy, President of South Valley University, announced the success of a medical team at the Department of Vascular Surgery and Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care at the university hospitals in urgent intervention to save a patient’s leg from amputation, using a combination of surgical intervention and interventional catheterization, which is one of the interventions that require special skill and equipment, which the university hospitals are always keen to provide it under the supervision of Dr. Ali Goel, Dean of Faculty of Medicine, and Dr. Mohamed Youssef, Executive Director of the university hospitals.

Dr. Walid Gamal Abdel-Mutaal, Head of the Vascular Surgery Department at faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital, added that by undertaking a medical examination on the 90-year-old patient, it was found that he was suffering from chronic insufficiency in the arteries of the lower extremities and a complete blockage in the left femoral artery, which threatened to cause gangrene in the left leg, in addition to his suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure accordingly, it was decided for him immediately to undergo surgery and interventional catheterization (hybrid operating system) for the arteries of the lower extremities and installing two overlapping stents in the femoral artery, for restoring the blood connection to the lower left extremity. This operation is considered one of the latest operations carried out in the southern Upper Egypt region.

Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud Mubarak, Director of the Campus Hospital, declared that The patient’s vital signs are stable and within normal limits. He is conscious and comfortable, with excellent indicators for recovery.
