Prof. Dr. Ahmed Akkawy, President of South Valley University, witnessed the opening of the activities of the Second Annual Pharmacy Conference in Qena, held under the title “Challenges of Pharmacy Practice between the Present and the Future.” The conference was sponsored by Major General Ashraf Al-Daoudy, Governor of Qena, and in the presence of Dr. Ashraf Abu Al-Wafa, Dean of the University’s Faculty of Pharmacy, Dr. Rasha Al-Sharqawy, Head of the Central Administration for Pharmaceutical Affairs, Dr. Muhammad Badran, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health in Qena, Dr. Raji Tawadros, former Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health in Qena, and Dr. Asmaa Muhammad Mustafa and Dr. Ahmed Al-Naqib.
Prof. Dr. Ahmed Akkawy stressed that the university facilitates all its capabilities for the success of this conference and other relevant scientific events, projects and research activities, noting that there are issues of mutual interest between the University and the pharmacy sector in the Ministry of Health, as pharmacy education in Egypt faces a number of current and future challenges, such as increasing demand for well-educated pharmacists, which requires careful examination of curricula, teaching methods, learning resources, and competence of faculty members. He added that the university seeks to spread awareness among students to know the importance of pharmacovigilance and its role in creating a safer pharmaceutical environment, and that the university, as part of its awareness of the importance of digital transformation in pharmacy practice, seeks to participate in research projects that explore the integration of telemedicine services, electronic prescription systems and other digital solutions to enhance patient care and improve access especially in remote areas.
Dr. Ashraf Abu Al-Wafa, Dean of the University’s Faculty of Pharmacy, confirmed that such conferences are a good opportunity to exchange experiences, noting that the Faculty of Pharmacy opens its arms to students to complete postgraduate studies, and that the university has finished preparing the regulation of postgraduate studies, awaiting the issuance of the ministerial decision to activate the postgraduate program to facilitate graduate pharmacists in completing their postgraduate studies. He also confirmed that the Center for Continuing Pharmaceutical Education has been launched, which represents a major step towards the advancement of pharmaceutical education in the South Upper Egypt region through holding workshops and scientific lectures in all fields of pharmacy. A number of cooperation protocols were held between the Ministry of Health represented in the General Directorate of Pharmacy as well as the Egyptian Medicine Organization in the governorate to participate in the training of students of sub-interns.
Dr. Raji Tawadros, former Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health in Qena, confirmed that the pharmacy profession constitutes a basic pillar in maintaining public health, and that the title of this conference raises the banner of the challenge facing the pharmacist from a therapeutic and humanitarian perspective and highlights the new role assigned to him as one of the pillars of the health system.
