Units of the center


Prof. Mohammed abul-Fadl Badran has demanded for constructing a centre for the cultural heritage. He has also provided a representation of its objectives, units and mechanism of work in this centre as well as submitting this proposal to the University Council and the Supreme Council of egyptain Universities. The decision of the president of the Supreme Council of egyptain Universities no. (178) on the 15th of November 2009 was taken to construct and initiate the centre as a specific researching unit at Qena Faculty of Arts. In addition, thi centre is independent in administration of its technical, financial and administrative affairs according to regulations of section no.8 of article n0 307 of the excutive regulation of universities no. (49)/1972. It has been agreed by the University Council to form the administration council of this centre via decision no. (985) on the 20th of December 2009. Work and tasks of the centre of the cultural heritage are divided through four (4) main units as follows:

  • Unit of Oral Literature.
  • Unit of Customs and traditiosn.
  • Unit of Beliefs.
  • Unit of Archieve.

The tasks of each unit have been identified. These tasks should be performed by the selected members of Executive board members and some of the assistant teaching staff who are interested in heritage. This centre is considered a direct call for all researchers, students and scholars in Upper-Egypt to be interested in gathering heritage whether they are from SVU or outside it.

Unit of Oral Literature:

This unit consists of the following members:

  • Dr. Thabet Mahmoud Hashem – the Unit Supervisor.
  • Mr. Ezzat Abdelalim Mahmoud – Member.
  • Mr. Ashraf Amin Gad – Member.
  • Mrs. Souad Saied Mahmoud – Memebr.

Tasks of this unit include the following tasks and roles:

  1. Collecting and documenting sahpes of the popular literature which are common in community of the Upper-Egyptain region such as (tale- autobiographies- songs- proverbs- popular poetry – popular religious poetry- argumentative poetry…).
  2. Getting use of the training hours of courses relevant to popular heritage and folklore in general and popular literature in particular as well as connecting between students’ assignments and the centre’s activities.
  3. Selection of a group of the most experienced and highly qualified specialists in recording popular literature whether inside or outside South valley University.
  4. Preparation of a database about all recorders of popular literature/folklore literature and all narrators.
  5. Organising competitions for collectiong and gathering popular literature/ folklore of the concerned people from South Valley University or outside it. This task could be done through coordination between central administartions of Youth Care in the university, Ministry of Culture and Ministry of youth & Sports (Centres of Youth & Sports in the region of Upper-Egypt).
  6. Selection of distinctive texts of popular literature/folklore literature to be submitted to the Excutive Board to be republished in a periodical book.
  7. Preparation of a database about similar centres of popular literature whether they are in Egypt or the Arab world or the Western World as well as starting to makle communication channels between them.
  8. Spreading awreness in the region of Upper-Egypt about gathering and recording popular literature/folklore.

Unit of Customs and Traditions:

This unit consists of the following members:

  • Dr. Ali Al-Din AbdelBadiea Al-Kasaby – the unit supervisor.
  • Mr. Ahmed AbdulFattah Hassan – member.
  • Mrs. Zamzam Mariea Darwish – Memebr.
  • Marian Nashaat Farah – Member.

Tasks of this unit include the following tasks and roles:

  1. Collecting and documentation of common customs and traditions (traditions of life cycle (birth – youth – death – feasts and other relevant occaisons) in the community of the Upper-Egyptain region.
  2. Audio-visual recording of folklore customs and traditions particularly customs and traditions which are widespread in a particular place (village – Square – particular destination- etc…..0.
  3. Manipulating the practical side in the course of customs and traditions at South Valley University which are relevant to the practical assignmemts of students.
  4. Selection of a group of the most experienced and highly qualified specialists in recording customs and traditions whether inside or outside South valley University.
  5. Preparation of a database of all recorders and informers of customs and tarditions
  6. Dircting recorders for the instructive evidences to facilitate the process of collecting these customs and traditionms.
  7. Submitting a quarti- annual report for the centre Excutive Board to clarify achievents of this unit.

Unit of Archieve:

This unit consists of the following members:

  • Dr. Yasser Raghab Solaiman – Unit Director.

  • Mr. Tarek Mohammed abu Al-Fadl- Member.
  • Mrs. Manal Gharib Yasin Mahmoud – Member.

Tasks of this unit include the following tasks and roles:

  1. Classification of all folklore which are relevant to the main mission of the centre in a way that facilitates reaching folklore types easily and through several means (name of recorder- name of the narrator- number of folklore topic – title of the folklore topic – date of recording),.
  2. Preparation of a database including all the folklore types to be accesseible as an electronic copy.
  3. Making a website hich should be updated according to the centre activities and which should encourage external participation.
  4. Publishing a periodical magazine which publishes activities of the centre as well as publishing the distinctive folklore/popular literature items being collected.
  5. Establishing a library for popular books and studies asd well as copying rare books and studies.
  6. Making communication channels with similar concerned regional and international centres, institutes for exchanging knoledges, scientific and field visits.
  7. Preparation for competitions and activities which contribute to increasing awareness about significance, recording and studying the cultural heritage to increase participation among students at South Valley University.
  8. Submitting a quarti-annaul report to the centre’s excutive board  illustrating achievements of this unit.
