The Department of Pharmacognosy is one of the basic and unique
departments in the faculty, as it has no equivalent in other practical
faculties. The following courses are taught in the department; Medicinal
plants, drugs, chemistry of natural products, and quality control on herbal
medicines. Its activity extends to contributing to the teaching and
research burdens.
It is concerned with the study of medicinal plants and natural sources,
starting with their appearance and microscopy, then their components
which include active substances with a therapeutic effect and ending with
methods of separation, and study of chemical composition, side effects
and utilization of these natural medicinal drugs as alternative treatments.
