This theory and clinical course focuses on the care of persons of various age groups with psychiatric mental health disorders and chemical dependence. Psychopathology of mental disorders is reviewed. Application of the nursing process within a multidisciplinary team approach is highlighted. Emphasis is on the therapeutic use of self with individuals, families, and groups in an acute psychiatric care setting. Communication skills, mental health assessment, and various therapeutic interventions are utilized by students in clinical placements.

This highly specialized branch of nursing focuses on caring and supporting individuals of all age groups suffering from mental problems or mental distress in different care settings including:

  • Individuals’ Homes
  • Inpatient
  • Outpatient
  • General hospitals
  • Community and rehabilitation units

Psychiatric nursing theory:

This course introduces the nursing student to the theoretical concepts and knowledge base of the psychiatric mental health nursing. Emphasis is on promoting, restoring and protecting mental health of individuals and group. The student will be able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of clients experiencing different types of psychiatric and mental illness. Current trends and issues related to psychiatric and mental health nursing will be discussed.

Psychiatric nursing practicum:

Student involved in this course are expected to integrate knowledge base from the mental health nursing theory course into practice. Also to utilize the nursing process within the therapeutic nurse client relationship with the emphasis on the humanistic holistic approach and develop an open communication with health care providers tem to facilitate the client healing process in a structured environment. The focus of the training is on the therapeutic use of self, this will be achieved by providing a supervised experience in an inpatient psychiatric setting. Learning is enhanced through direct interaction with the clients and actual participation in group activities that will help the student nurse to under stand self and others.

2.      course aim:

At the end of this course, the fourth year student should be able to:

§  Utilizes the nursing process assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementing and evaluating to meet the needs of the psychiatric client.

§  Uses principles of therapeutic communication with psychiatric clients, co-workers or instructors.

§  Uses established guidelines to develop and implement teaching plans to instruct psychiatric clients and their families

§  Assumes responsibility when managing nursing care for the psychiatric client using available resources.

§  Practices nursing for the psychiatric client within an ethical and legal framework and is accountable for those nursing practices.

Vision

The vision of Mental Health Nursing Department is to strive towards equipping nursing students to develop excellence in maintaining and promoting health through various activities in practice, education and research.

Mission

The mission of the department is to achieve excellence in teaching and learning in the area of mental health nursing through developing and executing strong educational programs and research activities ultimately leading to better care of the community.

Objectives

1- Integrate relevant knowledge and skills rooted in the nursing, human and social sciences in providing quality comprehensive nursing practice.

2-Impart quality education to the students in the field of mental health nursing.

3-Prepare the students to become nursing leaders who will work as efficient professional nurses in the hospitals and community settings.

4-Emphasize the importance of health education and communication skills in mental health for preparing professional nurses to increase the individual, family and community awareness toward achieving self care.

5-Collaborate with the governmental and non-governmental organizations in meeting the health needs of the people.

6- Organize  staff development programs for the teachers of the department in the view of enhancing their knowledge and skills.
