Plenary Session

Power Systems is an enabling technology that can substantially improve the way electricity harvested, conserved, and consumed. Starting from overhead transmission lines and underground cables to construct cities infrastructure to luxuries lifestyle with modern equipments, Power Systems play the main role to introduce solutions. Moreover, Power Systems create new opportunity and substantial saving with engineering efforts to put solutions into products. The topics and presenters of the plenary session are selected carefully to provide the audience with insightful practical views of the state-of-the-art and future trends in developments and employment of modern Power Systems. We invite you to explore this year’s plenary program to obtain more information from our outstanding speakers. The plenary session will be held in Horizon-C.

Power for Mobility -e-motion against emission-

Roland S. Reichel

 Abdel-Aty (Aty) Edris

Abdel-Aty (Aty) Edris was born in Cairo, Egypt. He received his BS with honors from Cairo University, his MS from Ain-Shams University, Egypt, and his Ph.D. from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. Dr. Edris spent 12 years with ABB Company in Sweden and the USA in the development and application of Reactive Power Compensators and High Voltage DC Transmission systems. In 1992, Dr. Edris joined EPRI as the Manager of Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) Technology.

Dr. Edris is Senior Technology Manager of EPRI Power Delivery and Utilization and a member of several IEEE and CIGRE Working Groups.

Dr. Edris has received multiple EPRI Performance Recognition Awards, EPRI Technical Excellence Award, and EPRI Chauncey Award. He was also the recipient of the 1996 R&D 100 Award.

Dr. Edris was the recipient of the 2006 IEEE Award for Industry Leadership and Scientific Contribution to FACTS Technology, pioneering transformation of electric transmission system into flexible, controllable, yet secure system operated at thermal capacity.

Roland Reichel,

Roland Reichel, Dipl.Ing.(FH), Ms.Sc.(Eng.)

Reifenberg, Weilersbach, Germany

Hon. Chairman, German Solar Accociation (Bundesverband Solare Mobilität e.V.)

Mr. Roland Reichel got his first degree in electrical engineering at the Technical University Wolfenbüttel / Braunschweig in 1968. He worked as lecturer for high voltage and electric power at the Cairo Institute of Technology in Helwan/ Egypt from 1969 to 1973 and at the University of Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania from 1974 to 1979. In 1978 he made his Masters of Science (Eng.) degree at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Dar Es Salaam with the thesis “Wind Power and Rural Electrification in Tanzania”. In 1978 he participated in one of the first photovoltaic projects in Tanzania (2 x 300W at the Mount Kilimanjaro). In 1980 he worked in a consultancy team on the master plan for renewable energies for Kenya (GTZ project). From 1980 to 1997 Mr. Reichel worked for Siemens in Erlangen and Nürnberg, first in the field of system engineering for photovoltaics and later in design and planning of computer controls for electric distribution systems. Starting with the Tour de Sol in 1985, Mr. Reichel got involved in “Solar Mobility”. He was co-founder of the Solarmobil Verein Erlangen in 1985, the (later) Bundesverband Solare Mobiltät in 1989. He was chairman of the Bundesverband Solare Mobilität (German Solar Mobility Association) from 1991 to 2006 and is at present the “Honorary Chairman”.

Mr. Reichel is publishing the German magazine “Solarmobil” since 1987 (4 x a year, current issue is no. 68 of Dec. 2007,

see www.solarmobil.de/zeitschrift).

He drives a Citroen AX electrique and a CityEl-solar plus a solar-boat, and his house has a 4 kW photovoltaic power plant on top of the roof.
