- State of the Environment

As a result of the two Aswan workshops on Ecotechnie and Environmental Education in 1997 and 1998 respectively and the widely agreed need for improving Environmental Education and Awareness in Egyptian universities, the decision was taken to prepare a syllabus for environmental courses to be taught in Egyptian universities. This was the collaborative work of national and international experts where the Chair played the role of catalyst supported by the British Council/Cairo and UNESCO. As result of this work three syllabuses were prepared:

-General course in Environmental Studies for the first year undergraduates in all faculties of the Egyptian universities;

-General course in Environmental Studies for first year undergraduates in Faculties of Science;

-Fourth years undergraduates specializing in Environmental Science (Department of the Environment)

In a meeting with the Minister of Higher Education in December 2000 the syllabus of the General Course in Environmental Studies was approved and recommended for undergraduates in Egyptian universities to be taken by all students as part of their first year studies. At present the decree being prepared by the Supreme Council of Universities for final approval and signing by the Minister of Higher Education.
