Experience:                          Teaching Undergraduate and Postgraduate Courses in Organic Chemistry (Lectures and Practical classes). Research experience in Heterocyclic Chemistry including various analytical techniques and NMR spectroscopy.

 

Areas of Interest:                (i)  Decarboxylation of a-amino acids as a decarboxylative route to 1,3-dipoles and relevance to pyridoxal decarboxylase enzymes.

     (ii) Facile decarboxylation of a-keto acids. Generalization of Hammick reaction; and a novel synthesis of thioamides and 1,3,4-thiadiazoles.

     (iii) Nondecarboxylative 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions, leading to the synthesis of proline derivatives.

     (iv)  The b-lactams chemistry; the unusual Baeyer-Villiger rearrangement of b-lactam

     aldehydes and the synthesis of monobactams and related derivatives which are suitable blocks for b-lactam antibiotics.

(v) Synthesis of enantiopure polycyclic b-lactams via intramolecular nitrone-alkene cycloaddition of 2-azetidinone-tethered alkenylaldehydes.

(vi) The use of metal/amine catallised 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition as a route to stereocontrolled synthesis of optically pure highly functionalized pyrrolizidine systems.

(vii) Metal catallised hetero Diels-Alder cycloaddition  as a route to stereocontrolled synthesis of optically pure highly functionalized indolizidine systems.

     (viii) Catalytic deprotection of tertiary allylamines by using Grubbs’ carbene.

     (ix)   Oxidation of the pyrrolidines to the corresponding pyrrolines by using Cerium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN).
