Psychiatric nursing theory:<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
This course introduces the nursing student to the theoretical concepts<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n and knowledge base of the psychiatric mental health nursing. Emphasis is<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n on promoting, restoring and protecting mental health of individuals and<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n group. The student will be able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n the care of clients experiencing different types of psychiatric and mental<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n illness. Current trends and issues related to psychiatric and mental health<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n nursing will be discussed.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Psychiatric nursing practicum:<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\nStudent involved in this course are expected to integrate knowledge base<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n from the mental health nursing theory course into practice. Also to utilize<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n the nursing process within the therapeutic nurse client relationship with<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n the emphasis on the humanistic holistic approach and develop an open<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n communication with health care providers team to facilitate the client<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n healing process in a structured environment. The focus of the training is<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n on the therapeutic use of self, this will be achieved by providing a<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n supervised experience in an inpatient psychiatric setting. Learning is<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n enhanced through direct interaction with the clients and actual<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n participation in group activities that will help the student nurse to under<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n stand self and others.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
2. course aims:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\nAt the end of this course, the fourth year student should be able to:<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n- \u00a0 Utilizes the nursing process assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementing and evaluating to meet the needs of the psychiatric client.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n
- \u00a0Uses established guidelines to develop and implement teaching plans to instruct psychiatric clients and their families.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n
- \u00a0Assumes responsibility when managing nursing care for the psychiatric client using available resources.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n
- \u00a0Practices nursing for the psychiatric client within an ethical and legal framework and is accountable for those nursing practices.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
